Written in Timbuktu around 1655 by the scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di, this is one of the great chronicles of West Africa. It tells the story of the Songhai empire from its first kings to the Askias, the pilgrimage of Mali's Kankan Musa, the scholars of Djenné and Timbuktu, and the Moroccan invasion of 1591 and the pashas who ruled after it.
